The Golden State Warriors led the Memphis Grizzlies 106-94 with 3:47 left in their home opener at Chase Center on Friday night, then did not score again from the field and lost 111-108.
Why it matters: The Warriors are 0-2 after a 127-105 opening loss at the Lakers, and they play again Saturday night at Phoenix.
How it slipped away
- De'Anthony Melton's 3-pointer with 3:47 left put Golden State up 12. The Warriors then missed nine shots and went without a field goal the rest of the way as Memphis ran off 17 straight points, AP reported.
- Ty Jerome's 3 with 1:24 left cut it to 106-105. Stephen Curry had a 3 blocked by Zach Edey, and Jaylen Wells tied it at 106 with a free throw.
- After misses from Curry and Brandin Podziemski, No. 3 pick Cameron Boozer hit the go-ahead jumper with 20 seconds left. He finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds.
Warriors standouts
Curry scored 24. Rookie Yaxel Lendeborg, the No. 11 pick, had 18 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in his home debut, and Podziemski added 18. Jerome led Memphis with 28.
Golden State started two-way center Graham Ike against the bigger Grizzlies, giving the team two rookie starters in a home opener for the first time since the NBA began recording starters in 1970-71, according to AP.
Testy night
The game had two double-technicals: Draymond Green and Memphis big man Isaiah Stewart before halftime, and Lendeborg and Jerome in the third quarter. It was Lendeborg's second technical in two career games. The attendance was 18,064.
Next: Warriors at Phoenix, Saturday, Oct. 24. Earlier: Warriors lose opener at the Lakers.
