Even Oakland's police union isn't immune to break-ins. A burglar got into the Oakland Police Officers' Association headquarters at 555 5th St. and stole money from a cabinet, union spokesperson Sam Singer said Saturday.

What we know

A suspect was arrested nearby while allegedly attempting another burglary, Singer told Bay City News. NBC Bay Area reported that the break-in happened last month and that, according to court documents, the suspect was on probation for burglary convictions last year in Contra Costa County.

“No files or information were impacted by the break-in and theft,” Singer said in a statement. “OPOA files are secured and locked and were not accessible to the thief.”

The union's message

Singer used the incident to make a broader point about crime in the city. “This demonstrates, sadly, that no one, not even police officers, is immune to ongoing crime in Oakland,” he said.

What we don't know

The union and news reports did not say how much money was taken or give the exact date of the break-in. The suspect's name and the charges filed were not included in the reports.
