A domestic-violence call in Alameda on Tuesday morning, Oct. 27, ended with a stolen police SUV, a search through East Oakland and a K-9 arrest in a basement.
How it started
According to Alameda police as reported by the Bay Area News Group, officers were called at 9:52 a.m. to a home in the 300 block of Stardust Place. The person protected by a domestic violence restraining order reported that it had been violated, and said the man had tried to get into the home by breaking a living room window. Officers spotted the man while searching the neighborhood, and he ran.
The getaway car
Police said that while officers were setting up a perimeter, the man ran to a marked patrol SUV that was running with nobody inside and drove off. Officers soon found it abandoned near 10th Avenue and East 11th Street in East Oakland. Police said the SUV wasn't damaged and everything inside was accounted for. SkyFox footage aired by KTVU showed the scene.
The arrest
With help from Oakland police, officers tracked the man to the basement of a home in the 1000 block of International Boulevard, where he at first refused to come out. An Alameda County Sheriff's Office canine team helped take him into custody, and he was arrested at 11:45 a.m. Police said he was treated at a hospital for injuries from the arrest, including a dog bite. KTVU notes that police have not released his name.
Possible charges
Police said the 27-year-old, who has no confirmed address, was to be booked at Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of unlawfully taking an emergency vehicle, vandalism, violating a court order, and resisting, delaying or obstructing a peace officer. No charges had been announced.
