Alameda police were called to the 300 block of Stardust Place at 9:52 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, on a report that a man had violated a restraining order and broken a living room window, according to reports from KTVU and the Bay Area News Group.

From a foot chase to a patrol car

Police say the man ran from officers on foot, then got into a marked Alameda police SUV that was running and unoccupied and drove off. The SUV was later found abandoned and undamaged at 10th Avenue and East 11th Street in Oakland. KTVU reports officers believe he may have jumped across rooftops as he ran, and drones were used in the search.

Found in a basement

With help from an Alameda County Sheriff's Office K-9 team, officers found the man hiding in a basement in the 1000 block of International Boulevard and arrested him at about 11:45 a.m. He was bitten by the police dog and taken to a hospital for treatment.

The 27-year-old, who has no confirmed address, was booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of unlawfully taking an emergency vehicle, vandalism, violating a court order and resisting arrest.
