All three Marin County Board of Education incumbents on the Nov. 3 ballot drew challengers this year. The seven-member board approves the budget of the Marin County Office of Education, about $67 million a year, sets the superintendent's salary and hears appeals on charter schools, student discipline and interdistrict transfers, the Marin IJ reports.
Area 5 covers all or parts of Larkspur, Corte Madera, Kentfield, Mill Valley, Tiburon and Belvedere.
The candidates
- Marilyn Nemzer (incumbent) has been on the board since 2001, according to the IJ. She is a former high school teacher and middle school counselor who founded The Book Exchange, which distributes free books to children.
- Avery Lieberman (Dentist / Inventor / Parent) is a retired dentist and former assistant professor of restorative dentistry. He told the IJ that "voters don't realize that trustees can take the same paid health insurance package that's offered to full-time Marin County employees," and wants that money to go to districts. The Ark reports he has pledged to decline county-paid health insurance. He says Nemzer received about $411,000 in premiums from 2007 through 2025, a figure she disputes.
The Ark also reports that Lieberman has drawn criticism for April Facebook posts, including a shared message about refugees in Europe. He says he did not mean all Muslims.
