Clayton voters will fill two City Council seats on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2026, choosing from four candidates, according to the city's official notice of nominees. Council seats in Clayton are at-large, so every voter in the city can vote for up to two candidates, and the two with the most votes win.

Who is on the ballot?

The city clerk's notice lists the candidates in ballot order, which was set by the Secretary of State's random alphabet drawing:

  • Amy Callaghan
  • Charles "Charlie" Schmidt
  • Maria Shulman
  • Kim Trupiano, the incumbent councilmember

Filing for the race closed at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, with the same four candidates, local site Clayton Watch reported. Contra Costa County's list of offices up for election also shows two Clayton council seats on the November ballot.

How to vote

Clayton's council race is on the same consolidated ballot as the state propositions and county races, run by the Contra Costa County Elections Division. Check your sample ballot or contracostavote.gov for drop box and vote center locations.
