Between Suisun City and Rio Vista on Highway 12, old streetcars and interurban trains still run on overhead wire.

The museum

The Western Railway Museum is built along the former main line of the Sacramento Northern Railway, according to Wikipedia. Its collection focuses on trolleys and interurban equipment, and it holds the largest collection of Sacramento Northern equipment in existence. It also runs part of the old line as a heritage railway. The Bay Area Electric Railroad Association, a nonprofit, operates it. It was called the California Railway Museum until it was renamed in 1985. The Sacramento Northern Railway Historic District was added to the National Register in 2012.

Visiting

The museum's site advertises an 11-mile electrically powered train trip. It's open Saturdays and Sundays year-round from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and it is closed on major winter holidays. The museum encourages buying tickets in advance and says tickets can't be guaranteed at the door. Hours and train operations can change because of weather, staffing or volunteer availability. The address is 5848 State Highway 12.
