A week after the Lakers ran them out of their own building, the Warriors got even, and then some.
The comeback
Luka Doncic scored 21 points in the first quarter on Friday night, and the Lakers led by 25. Golden State made only five field goals in the opening frame. The Warriors then scored 16 of the last 18 points of the second quarter. Brandin Podziemski hit a 3-pointer with less than a second left to tie the game 53-53 at halftime, the team said.
Golden State pulled away in the fourth, building a lead as large as 17, and won 112-95. It was the Warriors’ biggest comeback since 2015 and their third straight win, the San Francisco Standard reported. They are now 3-3.
Key numbers
Stephen Curry scored 31 points and made eight 3-pointers. With that, he passed Dominique Wilkins for 18th on the NBA’s career scoring list, the Warriors said. The bench outscored the Lakers’ reserves 50-7, led by De’Anthony Melton’s 16 points. Doncic finished with 37 points but had no assists over a long stretch as the Warriors’ defense, led by Draymond Green, changed its looks.
The backstory
The game followed rookie Yaxel Lendeborg’s trash talk toward Doncic in the season opener, which the Lakers won. Fans chanted at Doncic all night, the Standard said. (Our earlier story: the Warriors’ opening-night loss to the Lakers.)
