San Francisco police have made an arrest in an early-morning hit-and-run last weekend that killed a man on a motorized scooter at the edge of Lower Nob Hill and Pacific Heights.
The crash
Officers from Northern Station responded at about 5:08 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, to a collision at Franklin and Pine streets, the San Francisco Police Department said. They found an injured man who had been riding a motorized scooter. Medics took him to a hospital, where he died. He has not been publicly identified.
The driver did not stop. According to police radio traffic that morning, the driver was in a black SUV, Mission Local reported.
The arrest
The SFPD’s Traffic Collision Investigation Unit took over the case. Working with the department’s Sideshow Response and Enforcement Unit, investigators found the suspect vehicle in San Rafael. On Oct. 29, with help from San Rafael police, they arrested Daniel Llama, 39, at the same location. The vehicle was seized and towed to San Francisco.
Llama was booked into San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of hit-and-run causing death and vehicular manslaughter, police said. Police say the investigation is still open.
A second deadly week
The next day, another fatal hit-and-run happened about eight blocks away. That crash killed former Glide safety monitor Justin Randle, Mission Local noted. (Our earlier story: the Ellis Street hit-and-run arrest.)
