A man who fled San Francisco police on an electric scooter died Monday after crashing into a bus shelter at Mission and Eighth streets, a busy corner near Civic Center. Officers said he was wanted on an outstanding warrant. His name and the reason for the warrant have not been released.

How the chase started

According to the San Francisco Police Department, officers found the man near Mission and Eighth streets and tried to detain him because of the warrant. He rode away on an electric scooter, and officers pursued him. CBS Bay Area put the encounter at about 11:25 a.m. Monday. A Bay City News account carried by partner outlets put it closer to 12:30 p.m. Police have not publicly settled the exact minute in a detailed timeline.

During the pursuit, police said, the man struck a "street fixture" and was hurt. Citizen App images and on-scene reporting pointed to the bus stop shelter on the corner of Eighth and Mission as the point of impact. NBC Bay Area described a toppled scooter, a backpack and a shattered bus-stop scene after the crash.

What witnesses said

NBC Bay Area spoke with people who were nearby when the chase ended. One witness, who asked to remain anonymous, said in Spanish that the man came off the scooter and hit the bus shelter head-first. Another witness, Maurice Navarro, said emergency crews were doing CPR when he arrived and described heavy bleeding at the scene.

According to the witness who saw the end of the chase, officers running after the man did not reach him until after he had already fallen and hit the shelter. NBC also reported that one officer chasing on foot tripped during the pursuit and did not appear seriously hurt.

What police have confirmed

Officers gave first aid until paramedics arrived, and the man was taken to a local hospital, police said. In a statement Monday afternoon, the department said he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Traffic on Mission Street stayed closed for hours while investigators worked the scene.

Police have not released the man's identity, age or what the outstanding warrant was for. Anyone with information was asked to contact SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text TIP411, starting the message with SFPD.

Why the corner matters

Mission and Eighth sits at the edge of SoMa and Civic Center, with heavy foot traffic, bus stops and nearby BART access at Civic Center station. A daytime scooter pursuit that ends at a bus shelter puts riders, people waiting for transit and drivers in the same tight space. Police framed the stop as an attempt to serve a warrant, not as a traffic stop that escalated from a moving violation.

As of Tuesday morning, the department had not posted a fuller account of speeds, whether the scooter was a shared rental or privately owned, or whether body-worn camera video would be released on a set timeline. Bay Area Brief will update this story if police name the man or describe the warrant.
