Vallarta Supermarkets, the Southern California-based Mexican grocery chain, is getting its first Bay Area store ready in South San Jose. The store at 2179 Monterey Road is set to open before the end of the year, the Mercury News reported.

What to know

  • Location: The Plant shopping center near Monterey Road and Curtner Avenue, between Target and Home Depot. The 63,700-square-foot space was a Toys 'R' Us that closed several years ago.
  • Jobs: "Up to 200 new positions," according to a city document cited by the Mercury News. The chain is hiring now.
  • What's inside: City planning documents describe a full-service supermarket with a large produce section, a full-service butcher counter, an on-site bakery and tortilleria, and traditional foods from Mexico.
  • Store number: Vallarta's website already lists it as San Jose #75, Monterey Rd.

Part of a bigger push

Vallarta runs 66 stores, 65 in California and one in Arizona, and employs about 8,000 people, according to the Mercury News. City planning files say the company aims to "positively impact 100 communities by the year 2030" by opening about three stores a year.

The shopping center's owners, Arc Capital and Milan Capital, said they expect the grocery to drive foot traffic and help revitalize The Plant. No exact opening date has been announced.
