A fire early Friday, Oct. 23, destroyed a carport and damaged about 20 vehicles at a condominium complex off Almaden Road in San Jose, fire officials said.
Why it matters: No one was hurt and no residents were displaced, but many neighbors lost cars, and the cause is still unknown.
What happened
- Firefighters were called shortly after 2 a.m. to the 200 block of Shadow Run Drive, near Almaden Road and Alma Avenue, on reports of a vehicle fire, CBS News Bay Area reported.
- Crews had the fire under control about an hour later. The detached carport was destroyed and more than 20 vehicles were damaged to varying degrees.
- The damage was between two complexes, and some cars on the other side of a fence were damaged by heat, San Jose Fire Battalion Chief Robert Herrera told ABC7.
What residents saw
"There's like 3 or 4 big booms and it just spread really, really fast," resident Debra Bayerd-Ramsey told ABC7. Her car was charred, two of her other vehicles were damaged, and the heat cracked a window in her home.
"It just looked like a ball of flames," said neighbor Lisa Walker.
What's next
The fire department's arson unit is investigating as part of the routine process of finding the cause and origin, ABC7 reported.
