The Safeway at 6150 Bollinger Road in West San Jose, near the Cupertino border, will close permanently on or around Friday, Nov. 13, 2026, ending 57 years in the neighborhood. Safeway confirmed the closure to SFGATE and declined to say why.

Why it matters: Shoppers have a little over three weeks before the store shuts. It's the latest in a wave of Bay Area Safeway closures in recent years, including stores in Pinole, Hayward, Vallejo and San Francisco.

More than a grocery store

Nearby middle and high school students use the store as a hangout on minimum days, and alternate diploma programs have used trips there to practice life skills such as finding items and paying at checkout, SFGATE reported.

The bigger picture

  • Safeway has proposed several mixed-use housing redevelopments of Bay Area stores this year with developer Align Real Estate, including in San Francisco's Marina District, Outer Richmond, Bernal Heights and the Fillmore.
  • A July SFGATE investigation found that parent company Albertsons' practice of leaving stores it owns empty, or adding lease covenants that bar grocery sales, has led to long-term vacancies in at least seven California supermarket buildings.
  • In September, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation to limit that practice.

The Focal noted that Safeway did not provide a reason for the closure. Looking for a new store nearby? Hashi Market opened on Stevens Creek Boulevard in Cupertino recently.
