San Jose police have arrested two men in what they describe as a gang-motivated attempted murder on Monterey Highway this spring.
What police say happened
The attack happened at about 1:45 a.m. on April 10 in the 3800 block of Monterey Highway, near the Edenvale and Seven Trees neighborhoods, according to the San Jose Police Department. Police said a man got into an argument with a group of people outside a business, and the group beat him and stabbed him several times.
The arrests
Police identified the suspects as Jose Valle, 43, and Benjamin Mendez, 25, both of San Jose. Both were taken into custody on Sept. 30: Valle in Fowler, a small town in Fresno County, and Mendez in Redwood City. They were booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. Police announced the arrests on Thursday.
The two have been arrested, not convicted, and police have not said whether they have entered pleas or been formally charged. Police did not release the victim's name or say how badly he was hurt.
A second case
KTVU reported Thursday evening that three men are in custody in connection with two separate gang-related stabbings in San Jose. Police have released detailed information publicly only about the Monterey Highway case.
How to help
Police are asking anyone with information about this case or similar cases to contact Detective Moreno of the department's Gang Investigations Unit at 408-277-3835 or [email protected].
The arrests come as Bay Area cities face ongoing debate about public safety spending and police staffing. San Jose's gang unit handles cases like this one, which can take months to build before suspects are located and arrested.
