Pool owners in San Ramon who head to Crow Canyon Commons for chlorine will find an empty storefront. The Leslie's Pool Supplies store at 3211 Crow Canyon Place has closed, one of 76 locations the company shut nationwide as it entered bankruptcy at the end of September.
What happened
Leslie's, the Phoenix-based chain that bills itself as the largest direct-to-customer pool and spa care brand in the country, filed voluntary Chapter 11 petitions on Sept. 30 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. In its announcement, the company said a deal with more than 80% of its existing lenders would wipe out about $685 million in debt, roughly 90% of what it owes, and bring in $150 million in new capital. Once it emerges, which it is aiming for in early 2027, the company expects to be majority-owned by a group of those lenders.
The same day, Leslie's announced the 76 store closures. The Livermore Vine reported that eight Bay Area stores were on the list, including one in Walnut Creek, with closures spread across 19 states.
Which Tri-Valley stores are still open
The other three Leslie's locations in the Tri-Valley were spared, according to the Livermore Vine: the stores on San Ramon Valley Boulevard in Danville, Santa Rita Road in Pleasanton and East Stanley Boulevard in Livermore. When the paper visited the San Ramon site on Thursday, Oct. 8, the shelves were bare, and a sign on the door pointed shoppers to a QR code to find another nearby Leslie's.
What it means for customers
The company says it is operating normally through the bankruptcy, both in stores and online. It has asked the court for permission to keep paying employees and vendors, and it says gift cards and loyalty program benefits will continue to be honored.
"Leslie's is here to stay," CEO Jason McDonell said in the company's announcement. He repeated the message on a new "Our Future" page on the company website, telling customers the chain will be "stronger for you on the other side of our restructuring."
Leslie's also said it will keep reviewing its real estate during the case, so more changes to its store map are possible. Court filings are posted by its claims agent, Kroll, at restructuring.ra.kroll.com/lesliespool.
