On the night before Halloween, a gunman opened fire inside a costume store at Fairfield's Solano Town Center mall.

What happened

The Fairfield Police Department said officers were called to the Spirit Halloween store at the mall at about 8:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30. Seven people had gunshot wounds. One died at a hospital, and at least three others were in critical condition, police said. The victims have not been identified, and their ages have not been released.

A witness told KCRA that his wife was inside the store when shots rang out. "I think she told that there was like five, six, seven shots when people were running," he said.

Police: a targeted attack

By Saturday morning, police said preliminary information pointed to a targeted incident involving one suspect inside the store, according to KCRA and CBS News. No one has been detained. Detectives are reviewing video and other evidence to identify the shooter. "This is still a very active crime scene," police said in a statement posted around midnight.

KCRA reported that the FBI's Sacramento office sent its Evidence Response Team to help. Suisun City police and the California Highway Patrol also responded.

Mall events

Solano Town Center canceled its planned Mall-O-Ween trick-or-treating event after the shooting, KCRA reported. The mall said it would still open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the Fairfield Police Department. They say updates will be posted on the department's social media and Nixle.
