Two separate crashes on eastbound Interstate 80 at the Air Base Parkway off-ramp in Fairfield late Tuesday night left one person dead and sent two California Highway Patrol officers to the hospital, KCRA and CBS Sacramento reported Wednesday morning, citing CHP.
The first crash happened around 10:45 p.m. Tuesday and involved two vehicles. One person died in that collision, according to CHP as reported by KCRA. CHP officers were still working that scene when a second crash occurred about an hour later.
Second crash hits a CHP patrol car
Around 11:45 p.m., on eastbound I-80 west of Air Base Parkway, four CHP officers were investigating the earlier two-vehicle crash. Four lanes were closed and traffic was being diverted into the slow lane, CBS Sacramento reported.
A Tesla driven by a 22-year-old Sacramento man went through the CHP flare and cone pattern and hit one of the patrol cars, CHP told CBS Sacramento. Two officers were inside the patrol car. They were taken to NorthBay Hospital in Fairfield. CBS Sacramento said both were expected to survive. KCRA, updating around 7 a.m. Wednesday, said the officers had major injuries but had since been released.
Both crashes remained under investigation Wednesday morning. Neither outlet named the person who died in the first crash or released the Tesla driver's name beyond the age and city of residence reported by CBS Sacramento.
Lane closures into Wednesday morning
Traffic was diverted off I-80 at Air Base Parkway while crews worked the scenes. As of just before 7 a.m. Wednesday, CHP told CBS Sacramento the slow lane had reopened but the other four eastbound lanes remained closed. KCRA's update around the same time said one lane was open, the rest were still closed, and there was no estimated time for a full reopening. Commuters heading toward Sacramento on eastbound I-80 should expect delays and check CHP or QuickMap before driving through Fairfield.
Why Fairfield highway incidents matter for Solano County
Air Base Parkway is a major interchange for Travis Air Force Base traffic and for drivers connecting between Fairfield neighborhoods and the interstate. Overnight lane closures there routinely back up into the Wednesday morning commute toward Sacramento and the East Bay.
