A motorcyclist was killed early Thursday, Oct. 29, after crashing on an Interstate 80 on-ramp in Fairfield, according to the California Highway Patrol.
What the CHP says happened
The CHP's Solano office said it got a report of a downed motorcycle rider at 4:22 a.m. on the on-ramp from Manuel Campos Parkway to westbound I-80, KCRA reported. Officers arrived around 4:27 a.m. and found the rider, a 37-year-old man, unconscious and breathing shallowly. Fairfield firefighters arrived shortly afterward and tried to save him, but he was pronounced dead at 4:36 a.m., CBS San Francisco reported.
According to the CHP's preliminary investigation, the rider was on a BMW sportbike trying to get onto westbound I-80. Officers said he was going too fast to make the curve on the on-ramp and crashed.
"The officers and staff of CHP Solano extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking incident," the agency said, according to KCRA.
What's next
Authorities had not released the rider's name Thursday morning because his next of kin had not yet been notified. The on-ramp was closed after the crash. Anyone who saw the crash or has information about it is asked to contact the CHP's Solano-area office.
A reminder as the clocks change
Daylight saving time ends early Sunday, Nov. 1, so it will be dark earlier in the evening. Freeway on-ramps with tight curves, like the loop at Manuel Campos Parkway, call for slowing down well before the merge, especially on two wheels and in the dark.
