One of Russian Hill's most storied homes is for sale. The Verdier Mansion at 1001 Vallejo St., a peacock-green Gothic house beside one of the neighborhood's grand public stairways, has been listed at $25 million, its first time on the market in 20 years.
120 years of San Francisco stories
The 9,545-square-foot house was built about 120 years ago for a gold magnate, and the Standard reports that its residents since then have included bohemians, soldiers, a department store heir and a Nobel Prize winner. SFGATE's account adds a wilder chapter: at various times the house was an opium den, a brothel and an officers' club, which helped earn it the nickname "the House of the Grand Passion." The Standard says the house has hosted high-society events, bohemian salons and wartime weddings.
'The OA House'
The mansion has a newer fan base, too. It featured prominently in the second and final season of Netflix's sci-fi series The OA, and so many fans have made pilgrimages that it is tagged as "The OA House" on Google Maps, according to the Standard.
The listing
SFGATE describes a six-bedroom home with an elevator, a garage and terraces, with views that take in Coit Tower and the Bay Bridge. The house keeps its original oversized light fixtures in the grand entry, and the current owners have painted the interiors in bold colors.
