The outdoor holiday ice rink in Union Square opens for the season on Wednesday, Nov. 4, and stays open daily through Monday, Jan. 18, 2027. Its full name is the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink in Union Square presented by Kaiser Permanente. It sits near Geary and Powell streets, and the rink lists its address as 333 Post St.

General admission is $22, and $17 for kids 8 and under. Both prices include skate rental. Sessions last an hour and start every 90 minutes. SFGuide reports the rink is open 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily and closes at 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 31. Lockers, gloves and socks are $5 each, and a skate helper for small children is $6, according to SFGuide's summary of the rink's visitor page.

Opening night

The opening celebration runs 5 to 7 p.m. on Nov. 4. SFGuide says the first 100 guests at the 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. sessions skate free, with registration on arrival.

Special nights

The rink promotes themed events through the season, including Drag On Ice, Silent Skate and a New Year's Day Polar Bear Skate. SFGuide lists Drag on Ice for Thursday, Dec. 3 ($35), Silent Skate for Thursday, Dec. 10 ($35) and the Polar Bear Skate for Jan. 1 ($30), plus Classical Sundays in the morning and themed Wednesday nights.

Free lesson lottery closes Wednesday

Kaiser Permanente sponsors free Learn to Skate lessons for beginners, handed out by random lottery. The entry window for November lessons closes Wednesday, Oct. 28, according to the rink's site. A second enrollment period is planned later in the season.

Getting there

Powell Street station serves BART and Muni Metro, and the Powell cable car lines stop nearby. If rain cancels a session, SFGuide says tickets can be moved to another date during the season. A second outdoor rink opens the same day at Fisherman's Wharf; see our guide to San Francisco On Ice.
