Sergeant Ma sits on the Mission Creek waterfront at 185 Berry St. in Mission Bay. It comes from Hi Neighbor Hospitality Group, and chef Jason Halverson runs the kitchen.

The idea

The restaurant's site says it is inspired by Halverson's mother and pays tribute to "the strong and formidable Asian matriarch" who shaped his approach to food. It describes the menu as combining Northern California's seasonality with Asian tradition.

7x7 says the menu takes cues from the communal spirit of dim sum, without carts. Small and large plates are meant for sharing and arrive as they're ready. Dishes 7x7 highlighted include a deboned, taro-crusted chicken wing stuffed with seasoned chicken; a lobster salad with sweet corn purée and puffed rice; duck pâté and liver mousse served with a warm pineapple bun; roasted scallops in tandoori sauce; and duck breast served two ways.

Finding it

The entrance is on the waterfront path along Mission Creek, flanked by yellow awnings near the Lefty O'Doul Bridge, according to the restaurant. Onsite garage parking has an entrance on Third Street, and Muni's T Third line stops nearby. Hi Neighbor CEO Ryan Cole told 7x7 the setting shaped the concept: "You're drawn to the water."

7x7 lists the hours as Monday through Saturday, 4 to 9 p.m. A fire pit and heat lamps warm the terrace.
