San José State lost 21-16 to New Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 31, at CEFCU Stadium. The Spartans fell to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the Mountain West.
New Mexico improved to 7-1 and 4-0 in conference play. UNM said it is the first time the Lobos have opened 4-0 in Mountain West play, and their first win in San José since 1969.
How the scoring went
SJSU's points came from three Sinatra field goals, of 25, 24 and 28 yards, and an 89-yard interception return by Tagovailoa-Amosa with 10:47 left in the game. SJSU said it was his first career interception and first touchdown. The Spartans intercepted three passes in all.
New Mexico scored on two short Humphrey touchdown runs, from 1 and 6 yards, and an acrobatic touchdown catch by Cade Keith that made it 21-9 in the third quarter. UNM noted that it scored touchdowns on all three of its red-zone trips, while SJSU went 3-for-3 in the red zone but settled for field goals each time.
The final minutes
The two schools describe the ending differently. SJSU's recap says the Spartans were stopped on fourth down with 1:25 left. New Mexico's recap says Brawley intercepted a pass in the end zone with 11 seconds left. Both agree the Spartans' late push did not produce a score.
The numbers
Weaver completed 16 of 23 passes for 190 yards, according to SJSU. Clark caught 8 passes for 91 yards, Bates ran 22 times for 63 yards and Lee led the defense with 7 tackles.
