San Francisco District 6 Supervisor Matt Dorsey faces a single challenger, Alex Behrend, on the Nov. 3 ballot. The district covers SoMa, Mission Bay, South Beach, Rincon Hill, Yerba Buena and Treasure Island. The race uses ranked-choice voting.

Why it matters: Dorsey is a reliable vote in the board's moderate majority and, Mission Local reports, a potential successor to Rafael Mandelman as board president.

The candidates

Matt Dorsey, 61, was appointed by Mayor London Breed in May 2022 and won the seat that November over Honey Mahogany, 53% to 47%. He is a former SFPD communications director who wrote the city's "Recovery First" drug policy. Asked how to help SoMa businesses, he told Mission Local the answer is "enforcing the law — consistently and fully," pointing to drug dealing, retail theft and illegal vending. He is endorsed by Mayor Daniel Lurie, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, Sheriff Paul Miyamoto and state Sen. Scott Wiener.

Alex Behrend, 54, a former voter organizer for Dean Preston's 2024 campaign who has also worked as a Safeway checker, lists himself on the ballot as "Neglected Voter Organizer." He calls Dorsey "MAGA-lite," faults his opposition to the "Overpaid CEO" tax, and wants a public bank to help small businesses. He is endorsed by former Supervisor Dean Preston, Juanita More and Arab Resource and Organizing Center Action. Behrend has lived in the district since April 2026.

The money

Dorsey has reported $104,553 in funds and $79,104 in spending, according to the SF Ethics Commission. Behrend has reported $2,200 raised and $637 spent. The GrowSF Voter Guide committee has spent $3,529 supporting Dorsey. No outside spending against either candidate has been reported.

A small, hard-to-reach electorate

District 6 has just under 39,000 registered voters, the fewest of the city's 11 districts, Mission Local reported. Turnout in the June primary was 41.8%, compared with 50.9% citywide. The 2022 redistricting moved the Tenderloin into District 5, and most homes in Mission Bay and South Beach are in buildings of 20 or more units, which makes door-knocking hard.

Behrend says his path runs through Democrats who usually skip local races, noting Dorsey won in 2022 with 8,546 votes in a district of nearly 34,000 registered voters. Asked how he would reach them, he told Mission Local: "I don't know yet."

Four other supervisor seats are up, including District 2, District 4 and District 10. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. See every race in our Election 2026 guide.
