District 2 Supervisor Stephen Sherrill, who represents the Marina, Pacific Heights and nearby neighborhoods, is on the Nov. 3 ballot for a full four-year term against Nicholas Berg, Monthanus Ratanapakdee and Guy McCoy, according to Axios and the city's candidate list.
Why it matters: Sherrill won June's special election, but that only let him finish the current term. He has to win again in November to keep the seat through 2030.
How June went
Sherrill, appointed to the seat by former Mayor London Breed, beat community organizer Lori Brooke 69% to 31% in June, Mission Local reported. Brooke, who was skeptical of new development, then said she would not run in November. "While I will not be a candidate in November, I am not going anywhere," she wrote.
Sherrill had about $1.4 million backing him in June, including third-party PACs, and is closely allied with Mayor Daniel Lurie, according to Mission Local. He is generally aligned with pro-housing YIMBY groups. "District 2 made it clear that they want a Supervisor who is focused, responsive, and committed to San Francisco's comeback," he said after the vote.
The challengers
- Nicholas Berg, chairman of the San Francisco Republican Party, whom Axios describes as a property management executive. "One-party rule gave San Francisco lousy results," his website says. Mission Local notes that about 10% of District 2 voters are registered Republicans and 62% are Democrats.
- Monthanus Ratanapakdee, a community advocate whose father, Vicha Ratanapakdee, died after being pushed to the ground in 2021, a case that became a rallying point for the Stop Asian Hate movement. She ran a write-in campaign in June that had drawn 13 votes as of Mission Local's report, and lists public safety and cleanliness as her top priorities. The man who pushed her father, Antoine Watson, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in January.
- Guy McCoy, who ran a long-shot mayoral campaign in 2024.
As of May 27, Sherrill had about $166,000 in the bank for November and no other candidate had reported raising money, Mission Local reported. The Examiner described Sherrill's position as even more dominant than that of Sunset Supervisor Alan Wong.
How to vote
San Francisco uses ranked-choice voting for supervisor, so voters can rank the four candidates in order of preference. District 2 voters will also see races for the Board of Education, the City College board and the BART board, along with 10 local propositions, Axios reports.
