A man was swept off the rocks at South Beach in Point Reyes National Seashore on Saturday, Oct. 17, and the U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search, the Press Democrat reported. The National Park Service is now leading the effort with beach walks through Tuesday, Oct. 20.
Why it matters: It happened during a National Weather Service Beach Hazards Statement warning of sneaker waves, rip currents and 7- to 12-foot breakers from the San Francisco coast to Point Reyes, the Chronicle reported.
The search
- The Coast Guard got calls about 3:34 p.m. Saturday for a rescue at South Beach, said John Thompson, Sector San Francisco public affairs officer.
- Crews searched with a 47-foot motor lifeboat and a helicopter, helped by the Marin County Sheriff's Office helicopter.
- The sheriff's office described the man as a missing surfer last seen in the waters off Point Reyes. He has not been publicly identified.
Stay safe on the coast
The park warns that South Beach often has large surf and that it is not safe to swim or play near the water's edge there. Never turn your back on the ocean.
