The Cooley Fire west of Cloverdale grew to 1,156 acres and 15% containment by Sunday evening, according to Cal Fire's Mendocino Unit, after a private prescribed burn escaped Friday on Cooley Ranch land near Lake Sonoma.
Cal Fire took over about 5 p.m. Friday when flames crossed a ridge road. As of Sunday night the agency listed 790 personnel, 47 engines, 35 crews, 10 dozers and 2 helicopters on the fire, which started at 5:05 p.m. Oct. 16 at Elkhorn Road and Cooley Ranch Road.
Smoke and air quality
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District extended an advisory through Monday for smoke that may affect Marin, Sonoma and Napa counties. It urged people in smoky areas to stay indoors with windows closed when temperatures allow, recirculate car air and check the EPA Fire and Smoke Map. The district said levels were not expected to trigger a Spare the Air Alert.
Cal Fire spokesman Tyree Zander told The Press Democrat earlier Sunday that smoke may be visible and residents should not call 911 solely for smoke from this fire. Cooler weather and possible moisture Monday night could help, forecasters said.
