Smart ring maker Oura has filed a new patent lawsuit against rival Ultrahuman in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, seeking damages and a permanent ban on U.S. sales of Ultrahuman's Ring Pro.
Why it matters: Ultrahuman only returned to the U.S. this year with the redesigned Ring Pro after an import ban on its earlier Ring Air, TechCrunch reported.
What Oura claims
- The Ring Pro infringes two Oura patents, D804,471 and 12,769,363, covering the ring's design and parts like its battery and sensors.
- Patent 12,769,363 was issued Oct. 20, two days before the suit, TechCrunch reported.
- Texas manufacturer SVTronics, which makes the Ring Pro in Plano, is also named.
Ultrahuman's response
"There is no court order affecting Ring Pro, and it remains available to customers in the U.S.," CEO Mohit Kumar told TechCrunch, adding the company "will defend our position vigorously."
The suit comes weeks after Oura shelved a $2.2 billion IPO, TechCrunch reported. Oura has also gone after Samsung and RingConn over patents.
