Password manager 1Password launched 1Password for Agents on Thursday, Oct. 22, a tool that lets AI assistants sign in to your accounts after you approve, without the agent ever seeing the password.

Why it matters: People are handing passwords to AI agents to book trips and pay bills. Axios reported the same day that U.S. banks are detecting agent activity in customer accounts, TechCrunch noted.

How it works

  • When an agent hits a sign-in form, it verifies its identity to 1Password with a unique digital key.
  • You see which login it wants and why, and approve it on your own device.
  • 1Password fills the password into the form directly, so it is never sent to the agent.

Which agents work with it

Launch partners include Meta's Muse, Anthropic's Claude Duet, OpenAI's ChatGPT Work and Dots, Grok Bot and Town's Townie, 1Password said. Browserbase, Perplexity, Ramp and others are also working on it.

"The old model where you hand over a credential and hope for the best doesn't work," said Aashish Tripathi, 1Password's chief product officer.
