Oasis Grill, the counter-service Mediterranean restaurant at 100 1st St. across from Salesforce Tower, closed Thursday after losing its lease, the SF Standard reports.
What happened
Owners Azzghayer and Mohammad Zughaiyir, a married couple, have run Oasis Grill since 1999. They told the Standard the 1st Street location operated for almost 30 years, selling chicken shawarma wraps and salmon kebabs to office workers. They rebuilt the space in 2015, a year-long project they estimate cost $2 million, including new gas lines.
The owners say they grew suspicious early this year when the landlord, Kilroy Realty, began showing the space. Kilroy did not offer to renew the lease, which expires at the end of this month, and told them the space had gone to another restaurant. "We were committed to San Francisco, we believed in San Francisco, and I guess we paid the price for it," Azzghayer said.
Where to find it now
The restaurant's website lists three other San Francisco locations: 47 Drumm St., 200 4th St. and 711 Market St. The menu includes kebab and shawarma plates served with turmeric rice, hummus, cucumber-yogurt salad and pita, plus salads, dips and vegetarian dishes.
The Standard notes the closure follows other recent goodbyes, including Mama Ji's in the Castro, where a rent hike helped end a 15-year run.
