The flatiron building at 1300 Battery St. on the Embarcadero, home to Fog City Diner from 1985 until its closure in 2025, is slated to become Moonchild, a "wine-forward California bistro," according to the SF Standard and Hoodline. The team targeted an opening late in 2026.

The people

  • Floyd Nunn was chef de cuisine at Eight Tables inside China Live and has cooked at Michelin-starred Quince and Benu.
  • Angelyne Tompkins spent eight years in hospitality at Scribe Winery in Sonoma.

The lease

The SF Standard reported the Port of San Francisco lease waives base rent in year one, then charges a fixed base rent plus a percentage of gross sales above $3 million. The roughly 4,000-square-foot space was renovated for $1.8 million less than five years ago and has a full liquor license.

A storied address

The site was a railroad facility and cafeteria in the early 20th century before Bill Higgins and Bill Upson opened Fog City Diner, designed by Pat Kuleto, in 1985. It appeared in the 1993 film "So I Married an Axe Murderer."

An opening date has not been announced.
