Golden Gate Ferry riders in Marin are on a temporary weekday schedule because four of the district's seven ferries are out of service at once. The M.V. Napa suffered an engine failure on Oct. 18, and disruptions began the next day. The Del Norte, the Golden Gate and the M.S. San Francisco are in drydock for required maintenance, according to the Marin IJ and the district's fleet-status page.

What's changed

  • The temporary weekday schedule covers Larkspur, Tiburon, Angel Island and Sausalito. Weekend service is unchanged.
  • Canceled: two Larkspur evening trips, one Tiburon morning trip and four Angel Island trips.
  • Buses replace 11 Larkspur trips and nine Tiburon trips. The bus ride takes about 55 minutes, compared with about 35 by ferry.

When boats come back

The Golden Gate is expected back next week and the Del Norte the week after. Regular schedules resume when the Golden Gate returns. The Napa, which carries up to 450 passengers, needs a $3.5 million full engine overhaul and is targeted to return in spring 2027. Federal rules require each ferry to be drydocked every 24 months, district spokesperson Paolo Cosulich-Schwartz told the IJ.

The fleet has four catamarans and three Spaulding-class boats. A $118 million replacement plan calls for two 500-passenger ferries, arriving in 2028 and 2029. Check the district's fleet-status page before you ride.
