If you're going to a vote center or polling place on Tuesday, Nov. 3, several Bay Area transit agencies will let you ride for free. None of them ask for proof that you voted.

Who is free, and when

  • VTA (Santa Clara County): All VTA bus and light rail service is free for riders who board between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Regular fares come back at 8:01 p.m.
  • SolTrans (Vallejo and Benicia): Local fixed routes are free all day. SolTrans Paratransit is also free for ADA-eligible riders, but you still need to book a trip the usual way.
  • Marin Transit: Local bus service is free for everyone on Election Day. It's one of the fare-free days the Marin Transit board approved in June as part of its 2026-27 budget.
  • Santa Rosa CityBus, Petaluma Transit and Sonoma County Transit: All fixed routes are free on Nov. 3, according to KSRO.

In a statement, SolTrans Executive Director Beth Kranda said, “Transportation should not be a barrier to voting.”

Not on the list

County Connection in central Contra Costa has posted a table of polling places you can reach on each of its routes, but it hasn't announced free fares. If your agency isn't listed here, plan to pay the regular fare. For more on where to go, see our county-by-county guide to vote centers and polling places.

How to vote

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls and vote centers close at 8 p.m., and mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and arrive within seven days. You can check your registration and ballot status at sos.ca.gov/elections. California lets you register and vote the same day at a vote center.
