Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is likely out for the rest of the 2026 season after being diagnosed with blood clots in his leg and both lungs, the team said.

Why it matters: The Super Bowl LIX MVP's absence reshapes the NFC race, and his replacement is former Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee.

The diagnosis

The team said Hurts has deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. "He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations," the Eagles said, according to NBC News. He is being treated with blood thinners and will not be allowed to take part in contact activities, including football.

How it unfolded

A superficial clot was found in London before the Oct. 11 game against Jacksonville, and Hurts played the full game. A follow-up scan in Philadelphia showed the clot had moved, and he sat out the Oct. 18 loss to Carolina. The team said it anticipates no long-term effect.

What's next

McKee, a 2023 sixth-round pick, takes over. No return date has been set.
