The Indianapolis Colts have fired general manager Chris Ballard in the middle of the season, ending a tenure that began in 2017.
Why it matters: In-season GM firings are rare in the NFL, and the 2-4 Colts face a possible sixth straight season without the playoffs.
The owner's statement
"Our standard is to compete for championships, and I believe a change in leadership is necessary to meet that standard," owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon said. She called the timing "a deliberate decision" and promised a thorough search for a replacement.
Ballard's record
Per Pro Football Rumors, the Colts went 72-82-1 in the regular season under Ballard, reached the playoffs twice and won one postseason game, in 2018. Head coach Shane Steichen remains in place.
