Halloween takes over Waverly Place on Saturday, Oct. 31, when Community Youth Center (CYC) holds the 12th annual Chinatown Halloween Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Project SF lists the location as Waverly Place between Sacramento and Washington streets, and the event is free.

What's there

CYC lists a pumpkin patch where kids can pick a pumpkin to take home, Halloween arts and crafts, virtual reality games and a traditional lion dance by LionDanceMe. The first 100 children at Trick-or-Treat Lane get a Halloween treat.

There are four categories: children 0 to 11, teens 12 to 17, adults 18 and older, and families and groups. The top three in each category win a $50 dining gift certificate to a Chinatown restaurant. CYC says the first 50 contestants who pre-registered can pick up a goodie bag at its information booth.

The festival closes out CYC's series of Waverly Place celebrations, after the Chinatown Springtime Festival and Craving Chinatown. It is sponsored by the city's Office of Economic and Workforce Development, with help from Chinatown Merchants United Association, LionDanceMe and Self-Help for the Elderly. Arata's Pumpkin Farm, Clancy's Pumpkins and Sloat Garden Center donated the pumpkins.

Getting there: Project SF says the Chinatown-Rose Pak Muni Metro station is about a three-minute walk. While you're on Waverly, read about Tin How Temple, and check Halloween weekend street closures.
