For North Coast voters, the biggest change in the 2nd Congressional District race is the map. This is Democratic Rep. Jared Huffman's first election under the lines redrawn by Proposition 50. The new district adds the heavily Republican counties of Shasta, Siskiyou and Modoc, including Redding, where his Republican challenger Robin Littau lives, Jefferson Public Radio reports.

The candidates

Huffman ("U.S. Representative" on the certified list) first won his House seat in 2012. Before Congress he was a senior attorney at the Natural Resources Defense Council. "It is a big district, and it's a big job," he told JPR.

Littau is listed as an "Enterprise Elementary School Board Member." She is a Coast Guard veteran and owns a Redding-based cleaning service and a faith-based lifestyle magazine. She argues that someone from inside the district is best placed to represent it.

What each calls the top issue

Littau named homelessness and public safety. Huffman named healthcare: "The cost of healthcare is out of control and getting higher." On costs, Littau focused on "fraud, waste, and abuse." Huffman said fraud is already a crime and the real problem is access and affordability.

A new issue for Huffman: wolves

The newly added counties are home to many of California's gray wolves, which JPR says have killed at least 394 farm animals since the species returned in 2011. Littau says ranchers are "at the end of patience" and welcomed new money for deterrents and compensation. Huffman wants to look at options that include improving habitat for deer, elk and antelope so wolves have more wild prey.

The numbers

  • June 2 primary (Ballotpedia): Huffman 56.5% (139,662 votes), Littau 11.4% (28,222). Six other candidates split the rest.
  • Fundraising (JPR): Littau has raised less than $5,000. Huffman has raised nearly $1 million since 2025.
