Gov. Gavin Newsom and Rep. Nancy Pelosi rallied Democrats at a San Francisco union hall on Friday, urging them to "deliver" the up to five House seats that Proposition 50's redrawn maps could add, KQED reports.
Why it matters: Prop 50 passed with more than 64% of the vote last year, setting aside lines drawn by the Citizens Redistricting Commission. Now forecasters including Cook and Sabato's Crystal Ball have Democrats winning around 235 seats on the high end, well past the 218 needed, raising the question of whether the maps were needed at all.
What analysts say
- Democrats could flip up to 20 seats nationally, KQED reports.
- PPIC's Eric McGhee says the party could probably have won a handful of California seats anyway, but the new lines also pad margins in seats Democrats already hold, a firewall for 2028 or 2030, SF Times notes.
- Strategist Rob Stutzman, Phil Ting and Jodi Hicks also weighed in, per KQED.
Bay Area angle
In the North Bay, Rep. Mike Thompson faces fellow Democrat Eric Jones in a district that lost Sonoma County Democratic voters he previously represented.
