Waymo announced Tuesday, Oct. 27, that over the next week it will add nearly 250 square miles of service across Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area. For the Bay Area, the company's blog post says only that it is "getting you to more areas in the south, including a new BART connection at Berryessa Station."
What changes in the Bay Area
- Coverage extends further into the South Bay.
- Riders can be dropped off or picked up at Berryessa/North San Jose BART, the southern end of BART's Silicon Valley extension.
- Electrek, which reviewed Waymo's updated maps, describes the service area as running from San Francisco down the Peninsula to San Jose and Campbell.
Elsewhere
The Los Angeles area reaches Torrance, Nashville extends south toward the zoo, Orlando nearly doubles its east-side coverage, and San Diego reaches La Jolla. Waymo didn't give square mileage for each city or say how many vehicles it is adding. Electrek reports the updated maps already appear in the Waymo app.
Why the BART stop matters
Berryessa is where BART riders from the East Bay arrive in San Jose. A robotaxi pickup there gives commuters another way to cover the last few miles to South Bay offices and neighborhoods that BART doesn't reach.
