The Transamerica Pyramid has a show that suits it. Syd Mead: Future Pastime, at the glass-walled annex gallery at the base of the tower, gathers 16 gouache paintings by the late designer whose visions of the future shaped science fiction for decades.

The exhibition's site lists it at the Transamerica Pyramid Annex Gallery from Oct. 8 to Dec. 17, open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. KQED gives the address as 535 Washington St.

A future at leisure

KQED's review notes the show includes none of Mead's film concept art. Instead, many of the pieces were commissions from companies or events in the auto industry, and most show a society at leisure: crowds watching races of horses, boats, cars and giant greyhound-like robots, parties, and travel through space alongside whales. Mead, who died in 2019, rendered reflective surfaces with an industrial designer's precision and lit his scenes in soft oranges and purples.

Curators Elon Solo and William Corman hang most of the work on temporary walls that echo the annex's zig-zag windows, KQED reports.
