Harold Pinter's Betrayal is now running at Marin Theatre in Mill Valley. The production is directed by Carey Perloff, the former artistic director of San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater. Previews began Oct. 22, the show opened Oct. 27, and it closes Sunday, Nov. 15.

The play

Pinter's 1978 drama tracks a seven-year affair between Emma and Jerry, the closest friend of her husband, Robert. Most of it runs backwards. Bay City News' Local News Matters notes that the first scene is set in 1977, as the lovers rehash the end of the affair, and the ninth goes back to 1968, when Jerry first seduces Emma. The audience knows things the characters don't. The cast is Liz Sklar as Emma, Tasso Feldman as Jerry, Charlie Semine as Robert and Nic Moore as the waiter. Yuki Izumihara designed the set and projections.

What the critic said

Reviewing for Local News Matters, the critic wrote that all three actors "capture every nuance of Pinter's carefully structured script" under Perloff's "ever-so-precise direction." The review says the timing of every line and every famous Pinter pause is precise.
