Sunol Glen Unified has one campus and about 240 students from transitional kindergarten through eighth grade. Its board has three members, so the two seats on the Nov. 3 ballot are a majority. Trustees Peter "Ted" Romo and Chris Bobertz are not running again, which means at least two new members will join the board.

The candidates

  • Gagan Bassi works in cybersecurity at Quanta.
  • Jennifer Kavouniaris ran for the Fremont Unified board in 2022 with Moms for Liberty backing. She supported Sunol Glen's 2023 ban on Pride flags, a decision that drew national attention to the district.
  • Karen Newcomb is a retired investment strategist who spent 34 years at a Fortune 10 company.
  • René Turnbull is a retired STEM dean from Contra Costa College.

The two seats are four-year terms and the race is at-large, so voters can choose up to two candidates. The same voters also decide Measure K, a $6.1 million bond to finish renovating the school's century-old main building.

How to vote

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. Polls and vote centers close at 8 p.m., and mailed ballots must be postmarked by Election Day and arrive within seven days.
