Sue Bierman Park, at Washington and Drumm streets, is a 4.5-acre green space between the Financial District and The Embarcadero. SF Rec and Park lists a playground, including an accessible play area, and restrooms.
Ferry Park and the freeway
Wikipedia says the park was completed in 1975 as Ferry Park. Lawrence Halprin & Associates designed it alongside Embarcadero Plaza. The Embarcadero Freeway and its ramps ran over it. A concrete bridge and stairs connected it to Maritime Plaza. In the late 1980s that spot became known as Hubba Hideout, a famous street skateboarding location.
The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake badly damaged the freeway, which was torn down in 1991, opening up the area.
A new name and design
In 2007 the park was renamed for Sue Bierman, a civic activist and San Francisco supervisor who died in 2006. ROMA Design Group redesigned it starting around 2010. The redesign removed the Halprin features and the bridge to Maritime Plaza, and the work was finished Oct. 4, 2011. Critics weren't kind. Wikipedia quotes one review calling it "a design that squanders the setting." A playground was added at the northeast corner in 2013.
Drumm Street runs through the middle of the park. Wikipedia says a 2025 consultant report found the park was not individually eligible for the national or California historic registers.
