Looking for something calmer than a Halloween party this weekend? St. Simon Parish in Los Altos is hosting "An Evening for the Soul," a free jazz vespers concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.
Who's playing
Pianist Shedrick Mitchell has won six Grammy Awards and has performed and recorded with Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder and Samara Joy, the Los Altos Town Crier reported. He's rooted in both church music and jazz.
Vocalist Meredith Dean Augustin moves between jazz, gospel and sacred music. Her recordings include "Deep River" and "Just Me and Bob," a live album with pianist Bob Thompson. She has performed on "Mountain Stage" and "Good Morning America." Augustin is based in New York, where she directs music at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, and she is also St. Simon's liturgy and music consultant.
