San Francisco police say a months-long investigation into smoke shops selling illegal products has led to searches at two businesses and the seizure of hundreds of items, according to an SFPD news release (#26-132).
On Sept. 10, officers served a search warrant at a shop on the 1400 block of Haight Street. Police said they seized suspected psilocybin mushrooms, kratom and 7-OH products, flavored vapes, nitrous oxide and glass pipes, and that items were displayed for sale with price tags.
On Oct. 9, officers searched a shop on the 4600 block of Geary Boulevard that police said had no tobacco retail license. The department reported seizing more than 200 flavored vapes, more than 400 kratom products and suspected psilocybin.
SFPD said it is working with the City Attorney's Office on the cases. San Francisco bans the sale of flavored tobacco products, including flavored vapes.
Why kratom products are drawing attention
SFist reported that the raids were announced as the city recorded its first fatal overdose tied to a kratom-derived opioid. Concentrated products such as 7-OH have drawn growing concern from health officials, and SFist noted that a related compound, MGM-15, is now a Schedule I substance under the DEA.
