Santa Rosa police arrested a 31-year-old man Friday, Oct. 23, after officers say he attacked a woman downtown and kept her from getting away. Police identified him as Vicente Perez.
Why it matters: An officer from the department's Downtown Enforcement Team was on foot patrol nearby and saw the attack, police said, so help arrived within moments.
What police say happened
Officers were called at about 3:25 p.m. to Wilson Street near Sixth Street for a report of a man attacking a woman, according to Bay City News, citing the Santa Rosa Police Department.
The officer on foot and another responding officer said they saw Perez assaulting the woman and trying to grab her belt. Officers took him to the ground, but he kept holding on to her belt while she tried to get free, police said.
Charges
Perez was booked on suspicion of false imprisonment, sexual battery and resisting a peace officer, KSRO reported.
The woman, who is in her 30s, was checked at the scene and did not need medical treatment.
What's next
Police have not said whether Perez and the woman knew each other. Charging decisions are up to the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office.
