Election officials and volunteers at the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters worked late Monday night collecting and processing ballots from vote centers across the county, NBC Bay Area reported.
“We have this whole courier process, where all our couriers are visiting the vote centers and bringing the ballots to our office so we can prepare for counting,” Michael Borja, the registrar's associate communications officer, told NBC Bay Area. Counting will speed up Tuesday and continue for days, the station reported.
Where to vote
The Los Gatan reported that the registrar opened 87 more vote centers on Oct. 31, bringing the total to 110, along with 111 official ballot drop boxes. All vote centers are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day and offer same-day registration, replacement ballots, language help, curbside voting and accessible voting equipment.
Registrar Matt Moreles urged voters not to mail ballots this late. “This close to the election, we strongly recommend taking your ballot to a Drop Box or Vote Center,” he said, according to the Los Gatan.
Tracking returns
The registrar's new Elections Dashboard shows how many ballots have come in, when, and whether they were cast in person or returned by mail or drop box. The Los Gatan reported it showed turnout of 21.6% on the morning of Oct. 30 and 28.18% on Monday morning. The registrar projects final turnout of 55% to 65%.
NBC Bay Area reported that San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan filled out his ballot at home with his family on Monday evening and planned to drop it at a drop box.
