A 64-year-old San Mateo man is charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Prosecutors say he threw a cup of about 200-degree coffee in the face of a fast-food manager, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office as reported by KTVU and KRON4.

What prosecutors say happened

On Thursday, Oct. 22, Willie Anthony Quinn walked into the Jack in the Box on 3rd Avenue in San Mateo and asked for free food. The 55-year-old manager said no, citing company policy. Another customer then bought Quinn a meal and a hot coffee. Later, Quinn demanded a fresh cup and began cursing at the manager when she refused. As she walked him out, prosecutors say, he threw the coffee on her face and neck. By the time first responders arrived, her face was starting to blister.

Arrest and charges

San Mateo police found Quinn the next day after spotting him on security video, and arrested him after the victim identified him. Prosecutors say police found a small baggie of methamphetamine in his pocket. Quinn has prior felony convictions for assault with a deadly weapon (1995) and assault with a firearm (2009). Prosecutors say that could expose him to life in prison under California's three-strikes law if he's convicted. He pleaded not guilty and remains in custody. KRON4 reports his next court date is Nov. 5.

A criminal charge is an accusation, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
