Riders have taken more than 4 million Lyft Bike trips in San Francisco so far in 2026, breaking the city's annual bikeshare record of nearly 4 million rides set in 2025, with three months of the year still left, the SFMTA announced Monday, Oct. 26.
The numbers
- 4 million+ trips in San Francisco in 2026 so far
- 500,000+ trips a month every month since June, a first for the system
- 1.3 million trips in 2018, the system's first full year; ridership has roughly tripled since
- 364 stations in San Francisco now, up from 352 cited by the city in July
Where people ride
The busiest station is at 4th and Townsend, outside the Caltrain station, where Peninsula and South Bay commuters pick up bikes for the last leg of their trip. The SFMTA says four of the five busiest stations are at major transit hubs such as BART and Caltrain. One of the most-ridden routes runs along the Embarcadero between Fisherman's Wharf and the Ferry Building.
Bay Wheels is now Lyft Bike
The system was renamed from Bay Wheels to Lyft Bike this year under a five-year contract extension through 2032 among Lyft, the SFMTA and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. Lyft says it will add 1,000 new bikes and more than 60 new stations, including 16 charging stations, and keep serving San Francisco, Berkeley, Emeryville, Daly City, Oakland and San Jose. Lyft is also expanding its reduced-cost Bikeshare for All membership to Medi-Cal recipients.
