Regular gas averaged $6.12 a gallon in San Francisco, $6.09 in Oakland and $6.00 in San Jose on Friday, Oct. 23, according to AAA figures reported by the Sacramento Bee, down from early-October highs.

Why it matters: Relief at the pump is real but small. California's diesel average hit an all-time record of $8.51 on Oct. 18, which raises costs for truckers and the goods they haul.

By the numbers

  • California regular averaged $6.06 on Friday, versus a national average of $4.29, the Bee reported. The state record is $6.44, set in June 2022.
  • Contra Costa County averaged $6.08, down from $6.28 on Oct. 15, AAA data via Contra Costa News show. The statewide average fell 15 cents in a week.
  • Other Bay Area metros: Santa Rosa $6.19, Napa $6.07, San Rafael $6.02, Vallejo-Fairfield $5.96.

Why prices are falling, and why not more

Gov. Gavin Newsom allowed an early switch to cheaper winter-blend gasoline on Sept. 28, which is helping prices ease. But crude oil remains high: U.S. benchmark WTI was $95.09 a barrel on Wednesday, Contra Costa News reported.

AAA spokesperson Doug Johnson said October is on track to be the most expensive October ever for gas prices.
