A late-night report of a man running through traffic with a gun in San Bruno's Lomita Park area ended with an arrest and a gun recovered from a home just up the street, police said.

What police found

Officers were sent to El Camino Real and San Marco Avenue at about 9:14 p.m. after several people called to report a man in the roadway holding a firearm, according to the San Bruno Police Department. By the time they arrived, the man was gone. What they did find were numerous spent shell casings, which led investigators to conclude a shooting had taken place. No injuries were immediately reported, according to the department's release as carried by Bay City News.

Accounts differ on the night it happened. KRON4 reported the calls came in Wednesday, while the San Mateo Daily Journal and the Bay City News account described it as Thursday night.

The search

Police said patrol officers identified a suspect and developed leads that pointed them to a residence in the 100 block of San Marco Avenue, steps from where the casings were found. Searching it, investigators said they turned up an unregistered firearm along with more spent casings and unused ammunition.

Investigators also determined the suspect, a 32-year-old San Francisco man, had a prior felony conviction that bars him from having a gun, police said. He was arrested on suspicion of offenses tied to negligently firing a gun and possessing a firearm as a prohibited person, and was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City. Police have not released his name.

What we don't know yet

Police have not said what, if anything, the shots were fired at, or whether anyone or any property was hit. It is also not yet clear whether the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office has filed charges, which would typically come before a first court appearance. An arrest is not a conviction, and the man is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The stretch of El Camino Real where the calls originated is part of the city's commercial corridor. Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the San Bruno Police Department.
